The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, sequel to the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, has largely avoided the use of pop songs, focusing instead on music inspired by the franchise’s classic video game themes.

Composer Brian Tyler adapted Koji Kondo’s iconic Mario tunes into a cinematic score that enhances the Mushroom Kingdom setting and triggers nostalgia for longtime fans.

The first film was criticised for using licensed pop songs that clashed with the movie’s tone.

Tracks like A-ha’s “Take on Me,” AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” and music from Kill Bill were inserted into key scenes, taking audiences out of the Mario universe and sparking complaints from both children and adult gamers.

In contrast, Galaxy uses only one major pop song in contextually appropriate Brooklyn scenes and a minor funk track during a brief party scene.

Otherwise, the soundtrack remains true to Mario’s world, including elements from Star Fox, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the Mushroom Kingdom without distraction.

Critics and fans alike have praised the decision to prioritise original game-inspired music, saying it strengthens the movie experience and keeps the focus on the franchise’s iconic imagery, characters, and settings.
