Kim Kardashian helps Afghan women footballers get to UK
Players of the Afghan women’s youth soccer team were flown from Pakistan to Britain with the help of a New York rabbi, a UK soccer club and celebrity socialite Kim Kardashian.
The plane chartered by the reality TV star carried a total of 130 people, including 30 young football players and their families. They landed at Stansted Airport near London on Thursday and will spend 10 days in quarantine before embarking on their new journeys and lives in Britain.
The young footballers have recieved support from a variety of people, including English football club Leeds United.
The club’s Italian owner Andrea Radrizzani tweeted, “When I received a call asking help to rescue the youth w team Afghanistan, I didn’t know even from where to start. Today they flew to UK. Proud to be part of the team to make this real.”
He welcomed the Afghan players and their families to the UK in another tweet.
The Taliban takeover of Kabul in August has resulted in an exodus of talented individuals from Afghanistan, including women who play sports.
The former captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s team Khalida Popal has been leading evacuation efforts for female athletes from Afghanistan. After the 30 football players reached UK safely, she took to Twitter to express her gratitude.
The football team players had managed to reach Pakistan to eventually receive UK visas but they were left guessing for weeks with no information on the flight out of the country.
This is where the Tzedek Association, a non-profit US group came in to help the stuck players. Rabbi Moshe Margaretten, founder of the group reached out to reality TV star Kim Kardashian for her help to pay for a chartered plane for the team.
Twitter users are all praise for the socialite for this act of generosity.
One user says these are the stories about Kim that should be highlighted instead of stories on “who she is dating.”
Kim Kardashian’s spokesperson has confirmed that the star chartered the plane.
