Babar Azam should have been Player of the Tournament, says Shoaib Akhtar

Former fast bowler says decision is "unfair"

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar termed the decision of awarding Player of the Tournament in T20 World Cup 2021 to Australian player David Warner "unfair".

After the Australain team won the final match against New Zealand held on Sunday, Akhtar in a tweet said he was looking forward to seeing Pakistan cricket team captain and skipper Babar Azam become Player of the Tournament.

Warner scored 53 off 38 and helped Australia chase down a total of 173 runs in 18.5 overs against New Zealand to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time.

As per the statistics of the tournament, Warner scored 289 runs in seven innings at an average of 48.16, including three half-centuries.

For Akhtar the decision was “unfair” as Warner’s score was second highest in the tournament, while Azam's score was the best of tournament. He made 303 runs, with four half-centuries, in six matches.

Some social media users disagreed with the former cricketer's opinion and one of them said Akhtar's opinion was based on "emotions".

A user accused Pakistanis of hyping up the "wrong players".

Another user blamed Babar Azam for “playing only for himself.”

While some didn’t agree with Akhtar’s comments, many supported the former fast bowler and said Azam deserved to be Man of the Tournament.

One user compared Azam’s score with that of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s, who has been Man of the Tournament twice.

Another social media user backed Akhtar's opinion and tweeted: “Totally unfair decision.”

This user said the ‘angrez’ are looting our people of their "rights" just like they did with the subcontinent.
