Global leaders praise Pakistan’s role in US-Iran ceasefire

The United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Kazakhstan all commended Pakistan on Wednesday for its diplomatic efforts to secure a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

UK praises Pakistan’s diplomatic role in ceasefire

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott welcomed the development, saying on X, “Thank you, Pakistan, for the quiet, effective, diplomatic role you have played in bringing about this vital ceasefire.”

New Zealand praises Pakistan’s role in ceasefire

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters expressed gratitude to Pakistan, Turkiye, and Egypt for their efforts.

In a post on X, he said, “New Zealand welcomes the announcements by the United States and Iran over the past few hours — as we welcome all efforts to bring an end to this conflict.

While this is encouraging news, there remains significant important work to be done in the coming days to secure a lasting ceasefire.

We are grateful for the work of Pakistan, and others such as Turkiye and Egypt, to seek to find a solution to the crisis.”

Kazakhstan hails Pakistan’s mediation in US-Iran truce

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also lauded Pakistan’s mediation, noting that the agreement was “reached with the mediation of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, Field Marshal Asim Munir.”

He added that the truce became possible due to “the goodwill and wisdom of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the senior leadership of Iran, as well as all countries involved in the military conflict.”

The president expressed hope that the ceasefire will be long-lasting and contribute to global trade and economic prosperity.

UN chief welcomes US-Iran two-week ceasefire

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said the UN chief urged all parties to work toward lasting peace in the region.

“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement of a two-week ceasefire by the United States and Iran,” Dujarric said in a statement.

He added that Guterres “calls on all parties to comply with international law and the terms of the ceasefire to pave the way for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.”

Australian PM welcomes US-Iran two-week ceasefire

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling it a positive step toward de-escalation.

Albanese criticised US President Donald Trump’s earlier threat to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure, saying such language was “not appropriate” and could cause concern.

Speaking to Sky News Australia, he said, “What we have called for is a de-escalation, and that is what has occurred, and that’s a good thing. This is positive news. We’ve been calling for a de-escalation for some time.

We want to see a resolution of the conflict.”

Saudi Arabia lauds Pakistan’s mediation in ceasefire

Saudi Arabia has appreciated the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts in facilitating the agreement.

In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the easing of tensions between the US and Iran is a positive development, adding that the continuation of the ceasefire and the start of talks between the two countries mark an important step forward.

The ministry commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their role, stating that Pakistan helped pave the way for peace by facilitating the ceasefire.

Spain backs ceasefire, criticises US role in conflict

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez celebrated the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on Wednesday but criticised the administration in Washington, without explicitly naming it, for having initiated the hostilities.

“The Spanish government will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they turn up with a bucket,” Sanchez wrote on his X account.

Sanchez said ceasefires were always welcome news, but added that “momentary relief must not make us forget the chaos, the destruction and the lives lost” while calling for “diplomacy, international law and PEACE” to prevail.

Sanchez has emerged as one of the most vocal Western leaders criticising ​what he calls an illegal and reckless war, closing Spanish airspace to US planes ​involved in the strikes and banning them from using jointly operated military ⁠bases in southern Spain.

EU welcomes US-Iran ceasefire

EU leaders on Wednesday welcomed the two-week ceasefire ​agreed by the United States and Iran.

“I welcome ‌the two-week ceasefire the US and Iran agreed last night. It brings much-needed de-escalation”, European Commission President Ursula ​von der Leyen said on social media platform ​X, adding it was crucial negotiations continue for ⁠an enduring solution.

European Council President Costa added on ​X that he urged “all parties to uphold their terms ​to achieve sustainable peace in the region”.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, said the ceasefire deal was “a step ​back from the brink after weeks of escalation”.

“It ​creates a much-needed chance to tone down threats, stop missiles, restart ‌shipping, ⁠and create space for diplomacy towards a lasting agreement,” she added.

US President Donald Trump announced late on Tuesday that he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire ​with Iran, ​less than ⁠two hours before his deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or ​face devastating attacks on its civilian infrastructure.

The ​announcement ⁠late on Tuesday represented an abrupt turnaround from his extraordinary warning earlier in the day, when he said “a ⁠whole ​civilisation will die tonight” if his ​demands were not met.

Turkiye supports efforts towards lasting peace in region

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan ​on Wednesday welcomed ‌a ceasefire declared in the Iran ​war, urging ​its full implementation on ⁠the ground ​and warning against ​any provocations or acts of sabotage.

He said he ​hoped the ​ceasefire would hold and ‌that ⁠the region could return to peace after suffering ​from conflict ​and ⁠instability since late February, ​adding that ​Turkey ⁠would continue to support efforts towards ⁠a ​lasting ​peace.
