Cyclonic storm Shaheen may cause torrential rains in parts of Balochistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Saturday, issued an advisory saying rain-wind-thunderstorms with few heavy, but isolated, falls are likely in parts of Balochistan under the influence of Cyclonic Storm Shaheen.

Torrential rains are predicted in Gwadar, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech and Panjgur districts of Balochistan till Sunday, while heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Lasbela, Ormara, Pasni, Gwadar, Turbat and Jiwani, according to the Met department forecast.

"The Severe Cyclonic Storm “SHAHEEN” moved west-northwestward during last 12 hours with a speed of 10km/hr, now lies centred near latitude 24.0N and longitude 62.5E, at a distance of about 125km south of Gwadar, 250km southwest of Ormara and 470 km west of Karachi," read the alert.

It added the system is likely to keep moving west-northwestwards till today evening and then recurve southwestward towards Oman northern coast.

The Met department predicted the following possible outcomes of the cyclonic storm:

Sea conditions would remain rough/very rough with high surge at times till Sunday.

Fishermen are advised not to venture in the sea till October 3.

Windstorm may cause damages to vulnerable structures.

According to an alert issued by the Met department on Friday, the deep depression over northeast Arabian Sea has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm 'Shaheen'.

It predicted scattered rain-wind/thunderstorm in various parts of Sindh, including Karachi. However, chances of torrential rains in Karachi and other parts of Sindh disappeared by today and the possibility of urban flooding had also gone down.

In the alert, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms were predicted in Gwadar, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, Khuzdar, Kalat and Panjgur districts of Balochistan till Sunday night.

It was also stated that heavy rains might generate urban flooding in Lasbela, Ormara, Pasni, Gwadar, Turbat and Jiwani.
