US crosses 3 million COVID-19 cases
United States of America has yet another undesirable COVID-19 record to its name. As today the number of COVID-19 cases has crossed 3 million in the country. According to the coronavirus live count provided by the website "Worldometer", as of now, the US has 3,007,261 novel coronavirus cases in the country.
US is by far the most adversely affected country by COVID having almost double the corona infections than the second-placed country on such list, Brazil. Other than the US, no country has even crossed 2 million cases, in fact, the only other country with 1 million-plus infections is Brazil.
The US has seen a serious spike in new covid infections of late, courtesy of the lifting of lockdown restrictions in most states. On average, over 40,000 cases have been reported daily from the last 7-10 days. Yesterday's tally was over 49,000 new confirmed cases and 271 deaths. The first-ever case of COVID-19 in the US was reported 164 days ago on 1/23/2020. So it took just five and a half months for cases to go from 1 - 3,000,000. It's astounding how fast has virus has spread and crippled the country.
President Donald Trump and his government have been criticized harshly by both the public and the Democrats for their inability to contain the virus. President Trump is accused of downplaying the virus for several weeks and showing a non-serious attitude about the whole pandemic situation. Even this week, Trump claimed that 99% of the viral cases in America were "totally harmless". Public health experts called this claim entirely false as had this been the case there wouldn't be over 130,000 deaths due to COVID-19 in the US.
Trump administration, on the other hand, claims that the increased testing led to an increase in covid tally and other countries haven't done enough testing. It is true that America has done much more testing than other countries but still the number of positive cases is too high. This means that the government's failure is evident as it hasn't been able to curtail the spread of the virus. Experts believe that the US is still a few weeks away from hitting its covid peak. So, it looks like Americans have still got a lot to do in defeating the viral disease.
