Commissioner Karachi bans rickshaws on eleven major roads
In a bid to improve the city’s traffic system, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has imposed a complete ban on the movement of illegal rickshaws on 11 major roads across the city. The restriction will be effective from April 15 to June 14, 2025.
According to sources, rickshaws operating without authorisation and on unregulated routes have been identified as key contributors to traffic congestion and accidents. The decision was made following recommendations from the Karachi Traffic Police and applies specifically to 1+2 and 1+4 motor cab rickshaws.
The ban has been implemented under Section 144 of the CrPC, and legal action under Section 188 of the PPC will be taken against violators. Roads affected by the ban include Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar Road, Stadium Road, and other key routes.
SHOs have been directed to take immediate and strict action against any breaches of the ban. Commissioner Naqvi stated that traffic police have been fully authorised to address complaints and take on-the-spot action. Rickshaw drivers have been advised to use alternative routes. The decision aims to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhance public safety.
