SUKKUR:  The local Meteorological Department has warned that water levels in the Indus River in Sukkur and Guddu Barrages area  are continuously increasing, and consequently, there is a chance of severe floods during the second week of September in Sindh province.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sukkur office has also directed the district management authorities to remain alert regarding flood warning on river Indus at Guddu and Sukkur.

According to latest hydrological condition, River Indus at Guddu and Sukkur is likely to attain high to very high flood level on September 14-15.

The PDMA has asked all the districts to stay alert for safe evacuation of population living in the Kacha area and in close proximity of River Indus as well as their livestock to safer and higher/ elevated places  as identified in their respective contingency plans at shortest possible notice as and when conveyed.

Maximum mobilisation of transport be ensured to achieve safe evacuation well in time as and when requested, the PDMA officials said.

The PDMA also asked that all preparedness measures including activation of district emergency operation centre round the clock, manned by well-versed staff and concerned officers for an effective response mechanism including early warning dissemination be ensured. Appropriate flood fighting resources such as dewatering pumps be pre-positioned and deployed in low lying areas.

The local Mmet Department has advised the Sindh Government to carry out necessary rescue measures.
