Islamabad police seek 70 KP lawmakers; 400 PTI leaders face terrorism case
Islamabad police have identified 70 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as wanted in various cases, while a separate case under anti-terrorism provisions has been filed against 400 PTI leaders, including former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters, over a protest outside Adiala Jail.
Court proceedings on Wednesday approved a three-day physical remand for 14 suspects arrested overnight in connection with the Adiala protest, handing them over to police for further investigation.
Among the KP Assembly members, former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur faces the highest number of cases, with 52 FIRs registered between 2022 and November 2024 across 18 different Islamabad police stations.
Current Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is wanted in 11 cases, including seven under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and additional charges related to attacks on police personnel.
Deputy Speaker Suraiya Bibi, Minister for Local Government and Higher Education Mina Afridi, and Assembly Speaker Babar Swati are also named in multiple FIRs.
Other notable figures include Faisal Turki from Sawabi and Aqibullah, brother of former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.
The cases against these lawmakers include serious charges such as terrorism, attacks on police and Rangers personnel, and violation of public order. Many of the accused have not yet secured bail.
Separately, a case was registered at Rawalpindi’s Saddar Baironi police station against 35 named and 400 unknown PTI leaders involved in a protest outside Adiala Jail.
The FIR cites attacks on police with petrol bombs, acts of violence, and violation of Section 144.
Named individuals include Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma, Noreen Niazi, Qasim Khan, Salman Akram Raja, and Aliya Hamza, among others.
Police investigations are ongoing, and further legal action is expected as additional participants are identified.
The court’s recent approval of the three-day physical remand for the 14 arrested leaders signals intensified enforcement measures against PTI activists involved in violent protests.
