A pregnant meteorologist in America’s Washington state has reminded one of her viewer’s a basic life lesson while responding to a criticism over her attire while presenting news.

Claire Anderson, a meteorologist for KCPQ in Seattle, is nearly eight months pregnant and has a message for viewers who comment on her clothing choices during broadcasts.

In a TikTok video posted earlier this month, Anderson shared an email she received from a viewer named Kathy, who requested that she “please, PLEASE, pack away the form-fitting dresses until after the baby.”

The email went on to say that Anderson’s “mommy bump” had become so prominent that it distracted from her weather presentations, suggesting that she opt for “something loose and flowing” instead. The viewer, while complimenting Anderson on having “some of the best presentations on TV,” suggested that she should wear looser clothing to avoid distracting viewers.

Anderson addressed the criticism directly, stating, “Alright, here’s the thing, Kathy, I appreciate that, but remember we’re never supposed to comment on what women wear and look like — especially when they’re pregnant.”

In an interview with TODAY.com, she opened up about the challenges of being in the public eye while pregnant. The meteorologist noted that while she aims for viewers to focus on the weather map, they often end up distracted by her appearance. “Unfortunately, that is just part of the game,” she said, acknowledging the difficulty of navigating such scrutiny.

Initially hesitant to announce her pregnancy for fear of negative comments, Anderson found overwhelming support from her audience once she shared the news.

“For every 99% of happiness, there’s always going to be that one person that has something to say,” she said and added that those critical remarks tend to linger in one’s mind.

When she chose her outfit for a recent broadcast—a cream, fitted knee-length dress with a high neck and sleeves—Anderson said she didn’t anticipate it would offend anyone. In fact, she felt confident and happy about her appearance until she received a critical email suggesting she should wear looser clothing.

After receiving a critical email about her on-air attire, the meteorologist expressed her dismay, saying, “I come back, and I see that email, and I was like, ‘Oh man. Like, really? Bad stuff.’”

In response, Anderson created a video to foster a conversation about “women supporting women.”

She added: “It’s 2024, women support women, yet we still have the nastiest emails from women.” Anderson pointed out that many of the critical emails about her appearance have come from older women, highlighting the ongoing need for solidarity among women in the face of criticism.
