US Vice-President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, have announced the birth of their fourth child, the first born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.

The couple announced the birth of their son, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday in a statement shared on social media.

“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the statement said.

The Vances also thanked the medical staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre and the White House medical team for their care.

Alec joins the couple’s three children — Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.

The birth is a historic milestone, as the last sitting US vice president to welcome a child while in office was Schuyler Colfax, whose son was born in 1870 during his vice presidency, according to the White House Historical Association.

Vance, 41, has frequently advocated for larger families and higher birth rates in the United States.

Since joining the political fray in 2021, Vance repeatedly expressed concern over America’s falling birth rate and encouraged families to have more children.

Usha Vance, 40, whose parents immigrated from India, announced her pregnancy in January.

Her pregnancy attracted public attention due to the rarity of senior US officeholders expanding their families while serving in office.

The arrival of the Vances’ fourth child also comes amid a recent wave of births among senior members of President Donald Trump’s administration.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and his wife, Katie Miller, welcomed their fourth child in recent days, while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt gave birth to her second child in May.
