Pakistan hails successful first round of US-Iran talks
3 min readPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced that the first round of high-level negotiations between the United States and Iran under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding framework had concluded successfully in Burgenstock, Switzerland.
The talks, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, marked a significant step in diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
In a statement posted on X, the prime minister said the discussions were held in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and produced encouraging progress toward a broader agreement.
“Alhamdulillah, the First High-Level Committee Meeting under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has concluded successfully in Bürgenstock, Switzerland,” he said.
According to Shehbaz, both sides agreed on a roadmap to reach a final deal within 60 days, established a High-Level Committee to provide political oversight, and decided to continue technical-level discussions on key issues.
“I commend the leadership of both the United States as well as Iran for their continued commitment to constructive engagement, and thank all brotherly and friendly countries for their valuable support in advancing this historic process,” he said.
The prime minister thanked Qatar for its role in helping create conditions for the negotiations and also acknowledged the Swiss government for hosting the talks.
“In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to our brotherly country Qatar, for its critical support in creating the conditions necessary for these negotiations to move forward,” he said.
“A word of thanks to the Swiss Government for their facilitation in hosting these talks.”
Shehbaz paid special tribute to Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, crediting him for helping advance the peace process.
“I would like to pay special tribute to Field Marshal Asim Munir whose untiring efforts made these talks a success. His dedication, commitment and perseverance are indeed commendable without which there would have been no progress.”
The prime minister also praised Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Office team, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their diplomatic and political efforts.
“I would like to pay my warm compliments and heartfelt gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, for his diplomatic efforts along with his team at the Foreign Office. I also deeply appreciate the hard work of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who contributed immensely to the success of these talks.”
According to details emerging from the negotiations, the newly formed High-Level Committee will oversee the political dimensions of the process, while specialised working groups will address complex issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and US economic sanctions.
The groups are expected to submit regular reports to the committee as both sides seek to resolve longstanding disputes and move toward a comprehensive agreement.
The talks also focused on regional stability and maritime security. Both countries reportedly agreed on measures to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and established a direct communication channel to prevent misunderstandings and incidents at sea.
In addition, the two sides agreed to create a dedicated deconfliction mechanism aimed at supporting efforts to end military hostilities in Lebanon and monitor the security situation there.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the negotiations as a major breakthrough, claiming progress had been made toward ending the conflict in Lebanon.
He also said the United States had removed sanctions on Iranian oil exports and released some previously frozen Iranian assets and funds, although no independent confirmation of the claim was immediately available.
Despite ongoing discussions on technical matters, Pakistan and Qatar reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the process and maintaining a constructive environment for future negotiations aimed at achieving lasting regional peace.
