PM Shehbaz meets US vice president ahead of Iran talks in Switzerland
1 min readPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance in Switzerland on Sunday ahead of technical-level talks between the US and Iran under the Islamabad MoU in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir also met the US vice president during the visit.
US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were present in the meeting.
Pakistan has served as a key intermediary between the United States and Iran throughout the conflict.
“What’s up man! Good to see you,” Vance said as he warmly greeted Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Mediators from Qatar were also on hand at the picturesque mountainside resort near Lake Lucerne on Sunday morning.
According to the Foreign Office, representatives of the United States and Iran, along with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, will participate in the discussions.
Pakistan will continue to facilitate the process in its role as mediator, with a view to advancing the understandings reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Delegations from Pakistan, Iran and the United States have already arrived in Switzerland for the second phase of US-Iran ceasefire negotiations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are expected to participate in technical-level talks scheduled for later in the day in Switzerland.
