Iran is pushing for a “fair and comprehensive” deal in talks with the United States aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict, according to a senior Iranian official.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, in Beijing.

The visit marks Araghchi’s first trip to China since the US and Israel launched air strikes against Iran on February 28, highlighting Tehran’s efforts to engage international partners amid rising tensions.

Araghchi said Tehran would protect its “legitimate rights and interests” in ongoing negotiations.

“We only accept a fair and comprehensive agreement,” Araghchi told reporters after meeting with Wang Yi.

During a meeting with Araghchi, the Chinese foreign minister called for an immediate ceasefire and safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

China expressed deep concern over the two-month-long conflict. Wang Yi called for a “comprehensive ceasefire” and emphasised that “a resumption of hostilities is not acceptable,” stressing the importance of dialogue and negotiations to resolve the crisis.

In a joint statement following the meeting, China’s Foreign Ministry said, “A complete cessation of hostilities is of utmost urgency,” and urged all parties to ensure safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The strait, through which one-fifth of global oil supplies normally flow, has remained a flashpoint despite a fragile ceasefire in April.

Wang also reaffirmed China’s role as a “reliable strategic partner of Iran” while emphasising the need to prevent further escalation and protect global shipping.
