Karachi storm death toll rises to 11 in Mawach Goth
2 min readThe death toll from a storm-related incident in Karachi’s Mawach Goth has risen to 11, rescue officials said on Thursday, as the city continues to assess the aftermath of severe thunderstorms and strong winds.
According to rescue authorities, all the deceased were drug users. The bodies have been shifted to Civil Hospital for legal formalities.
The development comes after a powerful spell of rain, gusty winds and lightning battered Karachi on Wednesday, disrupting daily life, triggering power outages and slowing traffic across multiple areas.
Earlier, a wall collapse in Baldia’s Mawach Goth had left one person dead and eight others injured. However, officials now say the number of fatalities linked to the incident has climbed significantly.
Elsewhere in the city, five people were injured in Clifton when a tree fell during strong winds. Rescue teams responded promptly and shifted the injured to hospital.
In a separate incident near the Mehran Highway in Quaidabad, the roof of an under-construction house collapsed, injuring three members of a family — a man, his wife and their daughter. Hospital sources said their condition is stable and out of danger.
The storm affected several localities, including Saddar, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal, as well as North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and Surjani Town.
Electricity supply was disrupted in multiple areas, while rainwater accumulation and strong winds slowed traffic on key arteries.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the weather system behind the storm remains active. While conditions have temporarily improved, more thunderstorms are expected from Thursday afternoon, with chances of heavy rain, strong winds and isolated hail in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
Light rain is also forecast on the first day of Eid, while another westerly system between March 24 and 27 may bring further showers, keeping weather conditions unsettled into early April.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
