Pakistan, Saudi Arabia discuss defence ties amid Iranian strikes
2 min readChief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir met Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Sulman in Riyadh, where the two sides discussed defence cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as well as the regional security situation.
According to a statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Defence, the meeting also expressed concern over what were described as aggressive actions by Iran against Saudi Arabia.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace and stability in the region and expressed hope that the Iranian leadership would demonstrate wisdom and restraint.
“We discussed Iranian attacks on the Kingdom and the measures needed to halt them within the framework of our Joint Strategic Defence Agreement,” Prince Khalid wrote on social media early on Saturday.
“We stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability and expressed hope that the Iranian side will exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation.”
The meeting was also attended by Fayyadh bin Hamed Al Ruwaili, Chief of General Staff of the Saudi Armed Forces, and Hisham bin Abdulaziz bin Saif, adviser to the Saudi defence minister on intelligence affairs.
The Pakistani delegation included Brigadier Muhammad Javed Tariq.
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a “Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement” in September, pledging that aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both.
Separately, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif, the Saudi interior minister, received a call from Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who condemned the blatant attacks targeting the Kingdom and affirmed Islamabad’s solidarity in confronting any threats to the Kingdom’s security and stability, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.
