Pakistan Steel Mills hit by organised theft, FIA probe sought
Pakistan Steel Mills in Karachi has been rocked by the exposure of a large-scale organised theft, prompting the Ministry of Industries and Production to recommend a full investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
According to official documents, the theft occurred on December 24, 2025, at Pakistan Steel Mills’ B-Zone in Bin Qasim, causing heavy losses to the national exchequer and serious damage to the mill’s infrastructure.
An internal inquiry and police report revealed that heavy machinery, valuable electrical cables, industrial scrap and other key materials were systematically removed from the premises.
The stolen goods were taken out through Gate No. 5 without a legal gate pass, raising serious questions about the security system.
Police said around 36 tonnes of stolen material were recovered from a 22-wheeler truck.
A case has been registered at Bin Qasim police station, and investigations have pointed to negligence and possible collusion by some Pakistan Steel Mills security staff and Defence Security Force personnel.
Facilitation charges have been levelled against Sajad Hussain Khan and Nisar Ahmed, while it emerged that suspects Kashif Ghafoor and Chaudhry Akram submitted misleading statements in court, which led to their bail and weakened the prosecution’s case.
In a letter to the FIA director general, the Ministry of Industries and Production Section Officer Shahid Ali Khan said the incident involved organised crime and theft of state assets, falling under the FIA’s jurisdiction.
The ministry has sought a comprehensive probe, including the role of scrap dealers and other facilitators.
The letter has also been sent to the interior secretary, calling for strict measures to protect national assets and prevent similar incidents in the future.
