Aleema Khan released on bail by ATC after brief custody

ATC fines her for delaying witness statements in protest-related case

Rawalpindi’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday released Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, on bail after taking her into temporary custody.

The next hearing of the case is scheduled for December 1.

The ATC, hearing a case against Aleema Khan and 10 others over the November 26 protest, had initially ordered her temporary custody.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 per accused for allegedly using delaying tactics in recording statements of eight witnesses.

Aleema Khan requested the court to allow her release as her lawyers were occupied in the Supreme Court.

Prosecutor Zaheer Shah cited Section 351 of the Criminal Procedure Code, stating that she could not leave judicial custody without the court’s permission.

Upon leaving the courtroom, female police officers took her back into custody inside the court.

The court accepted a written request from her lawyer for additional time to present statements.

Prosecutors insisted that witnesses who had been appearing repeatedly record their statements.

On December 1, the court will also hear arguments regarding the restoration of Aleema Khan’s bank accounts and a request to remove the terrorism-related Section 7 of the ATA from the case.

Five government witnesses were summoned for Monday.

Aleema Khan submitted two surety bonds of Rs1 million each, after which the court allowed her release.

The proceedings were adjourned until December 1.
