The unchecked and chaotic traffic in Karachi has turned deadly, claiming 571 lives in just 227 days of the ongoing year, according to rescue and police officials.

Data reveals that heavy vehicles, including trucks, trailers, dumpers and tankers, were involved in the majority of fatal crashes.

At least 174 people lost their lives in collisions with such vehicles, with water tankers alone killing 44 people so far this year.

Fatalities caused by other heavy vehicles include 62 from trucks, 65 from trailers, 34 from dumpers, 25 from buses, 11 from minibuses, six from coaches, and another six from oil tankers.

The tragedy continues to unfold daily.

In the past 36 hours alone, 10 people — including a husband and wife, two young girls and a boy — died in separate traffic accidents across the city.

Overall, the victims include 439 men, 56 women and 74 children.

Police say motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable, followed by pedestrians and passengers of other vehicles.

Citizens have repeatedly urged the government and traffic police to impose strict restrictions on heavy vehicles, especially limiting their entry into residential and densely populated areas.
