Following in Karachi’s footsteps, the Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation has declared 250 old and dilapidated buildings as dangerous for human habitation, ordering immediate evacuation to prevent any potential loss of life.

Officials have issued notices to property owners under the Punjab Local Government Act 2022, warning of legal action against both residents and owners in case of non-compliance.

The affected areas include Raja Bazaar, Bhabra Bazaar, Moti Masjid lane, and Dangi Khoi, where several structures are reportedly in extremely poor condition.

Among the identified buildings, 188 have been classified as highly dangerous, posing a serious threat to life, especially amid continuous rains and the risk of seismic activity.

Authorities revealed that many of the flagged buildings are being used for both residential and commercial purposes, further increasing the risk.

However, several occupants have refused to vacate due to a lack of alternative housing.

The Metropolitan Corporation has directed residents to either renovate or demolish the structures. Failure to comply will result in legal action.

According to sources, the lives of citizens have been in danger for the last two decades due to the lack of effective action against dangerous buildings despite the Punjab government and court orders.

Residents have appealed to the authorities to arrange immediate alternative housing, enabling them to relocate safely.
