India suffers diplomatic setback in UNSC
In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, India has experienced another diplomatic defeat in the United Nations Security Council, as Pakistan and China successfully blocked India’s attempts to soften the council’s statement in its favor.
Pakistan, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, condemned the Pahalgam attack in strong terms alongside other nations. Following consultations with China, Pakistan managed to modify the language of the statement to prevent India from gaining any direct advantage.
Notably, the statement referred to “all relevant authorities” rather than specifically naming the Indian government, marking a significant diplomatic setback for India.
In a statement proposed by the United States, Pakistan ensured that contentious terms were omitted. Additionally, Pakistan insisted on the inclusion of “Jammu and Kashmir,” while India sought to include “Pahalgam” to suggest that occupied Kashmir had been annexed.
India not only failed to secure the inclusion of “Pahalgam” but also did not issue an immediate condemnation. Although the attack occurred on April 22, the condemnation statement was released four days later, on April 26.
Following the 2019 Pulwama attack, the Security Council had emphasized direct cooperation with the Indian government.
However, this time, Pakistan and China successfully thwarted India’s attempts to leverage the Pahalgam incident for further accusations against Pakistan.
Pakistan has firmly denied any involvement in the Pahalgam attack, expressing regret only for the loss of human lives. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has clearly stated that Pakistan is open to neutral and transparent investigations but will not accept India’s false narratives.

Reports indicate that a strict statement was being formulated under U.S. leadership in the Security Council to support India openly.
However, through a coordinated strategy, Pakistan and China altered the language of the statement, forcing India to confront embarrassment on the international stage.
A United Nations spokesperson expressed “extreme concern” over the regional situation and called for both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation.
The Security Council’s statement classified all forms of terrorism as a serious threat to global peace and stressed the need to bring those responsible for such incidents to justice. India’s attempt to directly target Pakistan in the statement ultimately failed.
International observers suggest that India is resorting to false propaganda to mask its diplomatic failures, while Pakistan has effectively exposed India’s maneuvers and presented its position to the global community.
