“A Minecraft Movie” becomes a global Box Office hit
A Minecraft Movie has stunned the entertainment world, grossing a remarkable $301 million globally in just three days since its release.
This immediate success has made it the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, trailing only Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World which has earned $410 million over eight weeks.
However, A Minecraft Movie is on track to surpass this figure in just a matter of days, positioning itself to become the top film of the year.
The action-comedy, rated PG, comes from Warner Bros. and Legendary, and has become a surprising blockbuster hit, shattering box office expectations.
Directed by Jared Hess, the movie follows the story of four misfits who are sucked through a portal into a cubic world.
With a production budget of $150 million, the film stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Initial projections had placed its opening weekend earnings at $65 million internationally and $70 million to $80 million domestically, but the actual result has far exceeded these estimates.
One of the standout achievements for A Minecraft Movie is its international debut, where it earned $144 million from 40,300 screens across 68 territories.
It achieved the second-largest international debut for a video game adaptation, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened in 2023 and went on to gross $1.3 billion globally.
The film’s success has been particularly pronounced in several major markets, including the United Kingdom ($19.9 million), China ($14.5 million), Mexico ($11.2 million), and Germany ($10.6 million).
In China, A Minecraft Movie has already become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of the past five years, surpassing other successful films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Uncharted, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The success of A Minecraft Movie marks a much-needed boost for the box office, which has faced challenges in 2025 with a number of disappointing releases.
Films such as Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White underperformed, while original films like Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights also failed to meet expectations.
The unexpected success of A Minecraft Movie is seen as a bright spot, with Hollywood hoping it can lead the way for upcoming summer blockbusters like Thunderbolts, Superman, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Lilo & Stitch, which are expected to continue the recovery of the box office in the coming months.
