Chinese animated movie ‘Ne Zha 2’ inches closer to $2 billion milestone
The animated film Ne Zha 2 led China’s box office, grossing 471.9 million Chinese yuan over the weekend of February 28 to March 2.
The film’s cumulative total is $1.98 billion, according to Artisan Gateway, as it nears the $2 billion milestone with ongoing audience interest.
Ne Zha 2 has also set new records in IMAX, earning an additional $7.6 million over the weekend, making its total in the format reach $144 million.
The film has surpassed 15 million IMAX admissions in China, ranking it among the top four most attended IMAX movies globally.
Since the start of the Lunar New Year period, IMAX titles collectively amassed $160 million, with Ne Zha 2 accounting for the majority of that total.
In second place, Detective Chinatown 1900 from As One Production added $6.9 million to its total, bringing its cumulative gross to $476.4 million. Despite the overwhelming success of the animated movie, the mystery-comedy franchise continues to attract audiences.
Fantawild Animation’s Boonie Bears: Future Reborn secured third place with $1.9 million, reaching a cumulative total of $108.5 million.
Beijing Culture’s Creation of the Gods 2 came in fourth, earning $1.5 million over the weekend, which brings its cumulative total to $168.2 million.
In fifth place is Dead Talents Society, distributed by Activator Co. Ltd (TW), earned $1.4 million in its opening weekend.
John Hsu directed the movie Dead Talents Society movie. The Taiwanese horror-comedy features Chen Bolin as Makoto, a former pop idol turned underworld haunting agent, alongside Gingle Wang as a rookie ghost navigating the afterlife.
The weekend’s total box office reached $83 million, pushing China’s 2025 cumulative total to $3.19 billion, reflecting a remarkable 65.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The original Ne Zha became China’s highest-grossing animated film after it was released in 2019.
The film’s earnings helped to boost the production company’s stock and drove related merchandise sales, surpassing hundreds of millions of yuan, reports said.
The general manager of Mianyang Zhonghuan Culture Communications, Wang Zheng was amazed by the film’s technical quality.
