UAE unveils new dirham symbol, marking a leap in financial evolution
The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) on Thursday unveiled a new symbol for the dirham, representing both its physical and digital forms.
Inspired by the English abbreviation of the currency, the symbol features two horizontal lines signifying stability.
The design also incorporates elements of the UAE flag, reinforcing financial strength and national identity.
For the digital dirham, the symbol is enclosed within a circle in the colors of the UAE flag, further emphasising national pride.

This unveiling highlights the UAE’s commitment to innovation and signals the dirham’s growing international presence.
In a related development, the CBUAE has become the first central bank in the Arab region to join the FX Global Code. This move strengthens the dirham’s position as a key international currency while promoting best practices and ethical standards in currency exchange.
Digital dirham set for launch in 2025
The UAE is set to introduce the ‘Digital Dirham’ in late 2025 for the retail sector. Leveraging blockchain technology, the digital currency promises secure, low-cost transactions, enhanced data protection, and efficient risk management.
Individuals and businesses will be able to obtain the Digital Dirham through licensed financial institutions, including banks, exchange houses, finance companies, and fintech firms.
Key features include tokenisation to enhance liquidity, financial inclusion, and smart contracts for instant, automated transactions — even in complex multi-party deals.
Integrated platform and digital wallet
The CBUAE has developed a secure, integrated platform for issuing, circulating, and using the Digital Dirham, including a dedicated wallet.
Designed for both individuals and businesses, the wallet will facilitate various financial transactions, including retail and wholesale payments, cross-border transfers, withdrawals, top-ups, and redemptions.
Additionally, the platform is designed to support emerging financial solutions, aligning with the rapid evolution of the UAE’s digital economy.
