Pakistan’s civilian, military leadership meets over national security as PTI boycotts the huddle

PM, COAS meet before the in-camera session of Parliament

The parliamentary committee on national security has commenced an in-camera meeting in Islamabad, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, as key civil and military leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir, arrived to discuss pressing security issues.

The meeting includes participation from federal cabinet members and parliamentary leaders of various political parties. However, the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen (TTA), associated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has announced its decision to boycott the session.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief General Asim Munir, the Director General of ISI, and the Director General of Military Operations arrived at around noon for the meeting, with more participants continued to arrive.

‘Parliament to find way forward’

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the military leadership, particularly Army Chief General Asim Munir. In his address, the prime minister emphasized that there is no place for terrorism on Pakistan’s soil and vowed to eradicate it completely.

“The entire nation is united in the fight against terrorism,” Shehbaz Sharif declared, adding that the sacrifices of the martyrs will never be forgotten. He asserted that Pakistan’s economy is on the path to recovery and stressed the importance of ensuring peace and security across the country.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir held a meeting in the Speaker’s chamber, where they discussed the agenda of the national security session.

The meeting comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing debates over potential security measures, with the absence of PTI representatives highlighting deepening divisions in the political landscape.

PTI leader Salman Akram Raja stated that no party representative, except Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, would attend. He reiterated the party’s opposition to any military operation and demanded the release of PTI founder on parole.

He stated they are not in favor of any operation and demanded the release of the founder of PTI on parole.
