Maria B highlights the trend’s appeal, suitability for different ages
Pakistani designer Maria B recently shared her insights on the “Farshi Shalwar,” a garment gaining attention as a new trend in Eid collections.
She posted on her Instagram account @_mariab_fatimab that while the Farshi Shalwar is noteworthy, she prefers cigarette pants for formal occasions and traditional shalwars for casual wear. Maria B suggested that the shalwar may be more suitable for older women, while younger girls can embrace the trend daily.
She said that the Farshi Shalwar has become a popular topic on social media, with designers incorporating it into their latest collections. Many girls are creating reels showcasing this trend, although some express disapproval.
This is wide and spacious shalwar opens at the feet and extends to the ground, providing comfort and freedom for the wearer.
Historically, the Farshi Shalwar dates back to ancient South Asia, where rural women and farmers wore it for ease during daily tasks.
The term “Farshi” relates to the ground, reflecting its design intended for sitting, walking, and working.
Currently, this traditional shalwar has re-entered the fashion scene, particularly for Eid, thanks to renowned model and designer Sadaf Kanwal, who reintroduced it in 2023 alongside short shirts.
The garment is now being adopted by both men and women, with celebrity endorsements, including interest from Fahad Mustafa, highlighting its increasing popularity.
Maria B emphasized that not every fashion suits everyone, advising individuals to consider body shape, height, and personality when choosing trends like the Farshi Shalwar.
