Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Jr, a social activist and human rights advocate, has confirmed his entry into politics, vowing to lead the Shaheed Bhutto faction of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP-SB).

Speaking on Aaj News’ programme “News Insight with Ameer Zia”, Bhutto Jr strongly opposed the controversial six new canals project, calling it a threat to Sindh’s survival.

“If Sindh runs out of water, it won’t just be humans — wildlife and aquatic life will also perish. This is nothing short of cultural genocide,” he declared.

‘Government is shaken by public protests’

Bhutto Jr claimed that the public backlash has forced authorities to reconsider their stance on the project.

“Our government is trembling because they have seen the sheer number of people protesting — even schoolchildren are on the streets. That is why they are trying to change the narrative and modify the project plans,” he said.

He further explained that the Indus River’s water would be diverted because the Sutlej River had dried up. According to him, increasing the capacity of link canals will allow Indus water to be transferred to Sutlej.

Political ambitions take shape

Confirming his political aspirations, Bhutto Jr said: “I announced in Nodero that I intend to step into politics. The Shaheed Bhutto faction of PPP, founded by my father, still exists, and I hope to lead it.”

He also emphasised the need to bring in young, fresh faces, saying that Pakistan has many politically orphaned youth who are energetic but lack leadership or organisation.

“I have a lot to learn from my country and its people. I don’t claim to know everything, but I am preparing myself,” he added.
