Karachi’s West district and Keamari might face water shortage after the water disruption because of the power breakdown in Balochistan’s Hub.

A sudden power breakdown at K-Electric’s Hub Pumping Station has led to a “complete halt” of all pumping operations, according to a Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation spokesperson.

He warned that the city might face a significant water shortage of 70 million gallons per day (MGD).

This would be the second water crisis in the city after the repair work on two major supply lines in the city last month.

There was around 40 per cent shortfall in the regular supply for around seven days. Major localities in almost every Karachi district — South, Keamari, West, Korangi, Malir, East and Central — faced water shortages.

The city received a total daily supply of 650 MGD (million gallons per day), reports said.

This comes amid dry weather in the city. Such conditions continue to affect many regions. The Met Office has reported that the winter months have been unusually warm due to predominantly dry weather.

The Indus River System Authority has already cautioned Punjab and Sindh—Pakistan’s primary agricultural areas—to prepare for potential water shortages of up to 35% for the remainder of the current Rabi season, which includes the crucial wheat crop.
