Tragic accident in Gilgit: Speeding car runs over four schoolgirls, including three sisters

Victims aged between 10 and 12; driver flees the scene
Speeding Car Kills Three Sisters in Ghizer – Aaj News

A speeding vehicle struck four schoolgirls, including three sisters, as they waited on a footpath in Gilgit Basin on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, the three sisters succumbed to their injuries, while the fourth student is receiving medical treatment.

Hospital officials confirmed that all four girls were brought in with severe injuries, but the three siblings could not survive.

The deceased students were identified as the daughters of Abdul Jalil, a resident living near the school. The victims were aged between 10 and 12 years.

Authorities have handed over the bodies to the grieving family, while a seven-year-old girl remains under medical care.

Following the incident, enraged locals set the vehicle on fire.

Police stated that the car owner fled the scene, and efforts were underway to arrest him.

Residents blame the rising number of accidents on the lack of speed breakers and footpaths on Gilgit-Ghizer Road, urging authorities to install safety measures near schools.

Accidents are a common occurrence in GB and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, attributed to the challenging terrain, inadequate road conditions, overloaded vehicles, and limited traffic enforcement. The risk of accidents is heightened by narrow, winding roads, severe weather, and driver fatigue, making these regions particularly hazardous.

In November last year, at least 18 wedding guests were killed and six injured when a Rawalpindi-bound bus fell into a ravine in Gilgit Baltistan’s Astore on Tuesday.

Last month, hundreds of people blocked a highway in Gilgit Baltistan in protest against power outages lasting longer than 20 hours, as temperatures plunged to minus 15 degrees Celsius.

In a similar situation, a speeding truck ran over several people at a wedding in Gojra, killing four, including young girls and women, and injuring eight others.
