Betrayed by blood: Cousin charged with holding wealthy siblings captive

26-year-old Jabeen Bibi died in captivity, and her brother barely survived

A shocking case of greed and cruelty has emerged from Chakwal, where a cousin imprisoned his wealthy relatives for two years to seize their vast inheritance.

The police have now registered a case against the accused, Chaudhry Ansar.

The chilling incident took place in the village of Gagh, where 800 kanals of agricultural land turned into a motive for betrayal.

The victims, 26-year-old Jabeen Bibi and her 32-year-old brother Hassan Raza, were locked inside a deserted house, and treated worse than animals.

Police raided the house after receiving an anonymous letter, only to discover Jabeen’s decomposed body, estimated to be at least ten days old.

Hassan was found alive but in a severely weakened state, unable to speak due to fear and trauma.

According to the police report, Jabeen’s corpse lay in the middle of a locked room, her body showing signs of injuries.

Hassan, mentally unstable, was too frail to provide any statement. The suspect, Chaudhry Ansar, a paternal cousin of the victims, allegedly kept them captive, feeding them only dry bread while controlling their multimillion-rupee estate.

The harrowing story came to light through an anonymous letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The letter, received at the Neela police station on February 1, described the siblings’ ordeal.

It detailed how their cousin had administered wrong medications to render them mentally unfit. The letter also mentioned that they were left unclothed in the freezing cold, surviving only on occasional food slipped through a window by a local woman.

The writer pleaded for their rescue, admitting his own helplessness but using his “pen as a weapon” to expose the injustice. Acting on the letter, SHO Sohaib Zafar verified the claims and obtained a search warrant. On February 12, police raided the house, breaking open the locked rooms to find Jabeen’s lifeless body and Hassan in a state of shock.

Authorities suspect Jabeen succumbed to extreme cold and starvation, though a post-mortem will confirm the exact cause of death. Hassan is set to undergo a medical evaluation to determine the effects of the alleged drugging.

Local police have launched a manhunt for the accused, vowing to bring him to justice. While some villagers claimed the siblings had mental health issues, the investigation suggests a premeditated plot to usurp their inheritance.

The case has sparked outrage, highlighting the darkest sides of greed and familial betrayal.
