Grand opening ceremony of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at Lahore’s Shahi Qila
The historic Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort) came alive with a spectacular opening ceremony for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Diwan-e-Aam.
With dazzling fireworks, music, and a vibrant display, the grand event officially marked the return of a major ICC tournament to Pakistan after 29 years.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his excitement, stating, “We are fully prepared to host an ICC event after nearly three decades.”
The ceremony was attended by ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, top officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board, government and political figures, as well as former cricket legends, making it a star-studded affair.
A special pictorial wall has also been installed at the National Stadium, highlighting Pakistan’s historic cricketing achievements.

The players, including Sarfaraz Ahmed, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Azhar Ali, Haris Sohail, and Hasan Ali, attended the event in white jackets. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, former pacer Shoaib Akhtar, and Punjab’s Inspector General of Police also joined the session.
ICC CEO Geoff Allardice’s address
ICC CEO Geoff Allardice emphasized Pakistan’s golden opportunity to showcase its passion for cricket, recalling the moment he witnessed Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy victory at The Oval.
Expressing satisfaction with preparations at Gaddafi Stadium and Karachi’s National Stadium, he assured fans of thrilling cricket over the next two weeks.
“Pakistan has a rich history of successfully hosting ICC events. I extend my best wishes to all teams and look forward to an exciting tournament filled with competitive matches,” Allardice remarked.
PCB chairman welcomes guests
Speaking at the ceremony, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi extended a warm welcome to all attendees, calling the event at Diwan-e-Aam a historic occasion.
“Pakistan is hosting an ICC event after 29 years — this is a landmark moment. We have upgraded stadiums to international standards, ensuring top-notch facilities for players and fans. This tournament will leave behind unforgettable memories, proving to the world that Pakistan is a great host,” he stated.
Sarfaraz Ahmed in panel discussion
Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed joined a panel discussion with Ian Bishop, Tim Southee, and JP Duminy, reflecting on Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy triumph.
“The 2017 victory is beyond words. The entire nation celebrated with us, and our homecoming was unforgettable. Karachi, my hometown, gave me immense respect. I hope Pakistan lifts the trophy again this year,” Sarfaraz shared.
Karachi to host opening ceremony on February 19
Karachi will also host an opening ceremony for the event on February 19.
The Champions Trophy will officially kick off with the first match in Karachi on the same day, featuring a clash between Pakistan and New Zealand.
The tournament’s most anticipated showdown will take place on February 23 in Dubai, where arch-rivals Pakistan and India will face off.
The highly anticipated clash between Pakistan and India is scheduled for February 23 in Dubai. Matches will be played across Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Dubai, with the final set to take place on March 9.
The tournament winner will claim a prize of over $2.1 million.
As the excitement builds, teams have already begun arriving for the competition. India and Bangladesh have landed in Dubai, with Bangladesh set to play a practice match against Pakistan Shaheens.
Afghanistan and New Zealand are preparing for a warm-up match in Karachi. Australia is expected to arrive in Lahore on February 17, followed by England on February 18.
With top cricketing nations competing for glory, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 promises to be a thrilling spectacle filled with intense rivalries and memorable moments.
