Shehbaz and Hamza acquitted in Ramzan Sugar Mills case

Anti-corruption court judge issues a 12-page detailed verdict

An anti-corruption court in Lahore has acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son, Hamza Shehbaz, in the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption case, ruling that there was no basis for their conviction.

Judge Sardar Iqbal Dogar issued a 12-page detailed verdict, stating that the prosecution failed to present substantial evidence against the accused.

The court’s decision emphasised that there was no proof of financial wrongdoing in the construction of a drainage system linked to the sugar mill.

The ruling highlighted that the complainant never filed a request with NAB against Shehbaz Sharif or Hamza Shehbaz.

Furthermore, all legal requirements were met in the approval and execution of the project, and the anti-corruption authorities failed to establish any irregularities.

According to the verdict, Shehbaz Sharif never held a directorial position in Ramzan Sugar Mills, while Hamza Shehbaz was not serving as the company’s CEO at the time of the project.

No witness provided testimony against them, making further proceedings unnecessary.

The court concluded that both leaders were wrongly implicated in the case and ordered their acquittal.

The case dates back to February 18, 2019, when NAB filed a corruption reference against Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz, accusing them of misusing public funds to construct a Rs210 million drainage system benefiting their sugar mill.

However, with the latest court ruling, the allegations have been dismissed, bringing an end to the long-running legal battle.
