Protest in Karachi over alleged police brutality resulting in Waqas death
Protests are currently taking place on both roads from Regal Chowk to Tibet Chowk along Marrakech Road in Karachi, following the alleged police brutality that led to the death of a citizen named Waqas in the lock-up of Preedy Police Station last night. The demonstrations have caused significant traffic disruptions.
Protesters are chanting slogans against the police and demanding justice for Waqas’s family.
According to family members, Waqas was arrested after colliding with a motorcycle driven by police constable Osama. They allege that he was subjected to torture by police officers throughout the night due to personal vendettas.
The family claims that the police filed an FIR against Waqas and two others for the motorcycle accident and theft of items, and that they were severely beaten while in custody. They received news the following morning that Waqas had died, with visible signs of torture on his body.
In the aftermath of Waqas’s death, the police released the other two individuals without any legal action. The family reports that the police are withholding the body, stating it will only be released after a post-mortem examination.
