Injured batter Saim Ayub would start recovering after a cast would be removed from his leg in one or two days, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said on Sunday.

“Saim Ayub is a valuable asset to the country,” he told reporters in Houston, United States. “We cannot jeopardise Saim’s future because of the Champions Trophy.

Ayub is in London for treatment, where he underwent his second check-up earlier this month.

He twisted his right ankle while fielding on the opening day of the second men’s cricket Test against South Africa at Newlands on January 3. The injury came on the second ball of the seventh over as Ryan Ricketon pushed a delivery through the slip cordon. Ayub turned and chased the ball but his ankle twisted causing him to fall.

The left-handed batter has been ruled out of competitive cricket for up to six weeks because of a right ankle fracture.

“I am personally monitoring Saim’s injury situation,” Naqvi said when asked about the recovery of the batter.

Ayub was clinical in the South Africa tour. He helped his side complete an unprecedented clean sweep of their One-Day International series in South Africa last month.

It was the first time ever that South Africa failed to win even a single match in a home ODI series. Their previous drubbing was 1-5 against Australia in 2002.
