Saim, Rauf, Shaheen make it ICC ODI Team of the Year 2024
Saim Ayub, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Shah Afridi have made it to the International Cricket Council’s Team of the Year 2024.
“The ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 not only offers quality, as expected but also a great balance of star power, consistency and versatility,” the council said in a blog on Friday.
The 11-member team has the highest number of Sri Lankan cricketers, followed by Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the West Indies. Charith Asalanka has been named captain of the team.
Pakistan’s left-handed batter Ayub made 515 runs in nine matches on an average of 64.37 runs. He hit three centuries and a half-century last year.
Saim debuted in November and scored a combined 125 runs from three ODIs in Australia, before scoring a maiden ODI ton in Zimbabwe shortly after.
Three of his last five innings have produced centuries, including two in South Africa in December, a three-match series that saw him average 78.3.
The sole West Indian cricketer was Sherfane Rutherford. He made 425 runs in nine matches.
Left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi found his pace last year in the South Africa series. He took 15 wickets in six matches. His best was 4/47.
“Shaheen Shah Afridi made a big impact despite playing only six ODIs in the calendar year. Possessing one of world cricket’s best bowling strike rates, he continued to prove himself as one of the most consistent performers at the international level,” said the blog.
Moreover, Haris Rauf took 13 wickets in eight matches. 5/29 was his best bowling figures last year.
“Rauf finished 2024 firing on all cylinders, taking 10 wickets across Pakistan’s three-ODI series in Australia, which included his five-for in Adelaide – a contest the touring team ended up winning comfortably.”
