PPP’s protest bears fruit as PM pledges to attend NA session
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) successfully pressured the government into ensuring the Prime Minister’s presence in the National Assembly after staging a protest. Following consultations between the PPP and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, the government pledged that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would attend the assembly session on Tuesday.
However, the PPP warned that they will boycott the session if the Prime Minister fails to appear as promised.
The PPP’s protest stemmed from the Prime Minister’s repeated absences from the assembly despite previous assurances. The party held a meeting with the Speaker in his chamber, where they reiterated their demand for the Prime Minister’s attendance. Sources indicate that the PPP threatened to withdraw their cooperation unless the Prime Minister appeared. Government officials reportedly appealed to the PPP to continue supporting the proceedings.
The PPP also pressed for assurances regarding the resolution of pending issues. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif reportedly contacted the Prime Minister to discuss the matter. Sources further revealed that the Speaker met with the Prime Minister, highlighting the lack of government members’ interest in the proceedings and requesting immediate action. It was after this meeting that the government committed to the Prime Minister’s appearance.
PPP Chief Whip Syed Naveed Qamar told the media that the party does not wish to boycott the assembly but emphasized the need for the government to address the quorum issue. He stated that the Prime Minister’s presence would resolve this problem. While expressing satisfaction with the government’s assurances, Qamar added that the situation would be reassessed on Tuesday.
Senior PPP leader Khursheed Shah clarified that their demand was simply for the Prime Minister’s brief presence in the assembly. He expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister did not attend on Friday despite previous commitments. Shah reiterated the threat of a boycott if the Prime Minister fails to appear on Tuesday, highlighting the Prime Minister’s repeated broken promises.
