Sindh chief minister writes letter to PM Shehbaz Sharif over motorway project - Aaj News

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah wrote a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday to protest federal injustices over motorway projects.

Murad pointed out that the National Highway Authority has “unfairly allocated” only six projects for Sindh while a total of 33 projects have been designated for Punjab. He emphasised that the NHA has reached a limit of injustice towards Sindh.

A dispute has arisen between Sindh and the federal government regarding the Karachi-Hyderabad-Sukkur motorway project.

The letter highlighted that the federal government has proposed Rs708 billion worth of projects for Punjab, with only Rs62 billion allocated for Sindh. The PPP-ruled province has been assigned just 78 projects with a meagre budget of Rs7 billion.

Shah criticised the coalition government for “crossing all limits of injustice” against Sindh, noting that 38% of the NHA budget would be spent on Punjab while Sindh would receive only 4%.

This is not the first time the Sindh chief minister has raised provincial issues with the premier. The Southern province has also urged the premier to resolve the water issue.

In his address after the inauguration of the first segment of the Malir Expressway project in Karachi on Saturday, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari criticised what he called the discriminatory attitude of the federal government towards Sindh.

He “likened” it to step-motherly treatment and accused the federal government of depriving Sindh of its due resources through various excuses.

Amidst such challenges, the provincial government has opted for public-private partnerships to carry out projects. The highway construction was done under a similar model.
