Indian poet and filmmaker Pritish Nandy passes away at 73

Nandy expanded his horizons into television with the creation of The Pritish Nandy Show

Indian poet, journalist, film producer, and former parliamentarian Pritish Nandy has passed away at the age of 73.

Actor Anupam Kher, a close friend of Nandy, expressed his condolences on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Kher described Nandy as a “fearless” artist and noted that he was a crucial support system during his early years in Mumbai. “He was also one of the most fearless people I had come across. Always larger than life,” Kher wrote in his heartfelt tribute.

Nandy’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which he became a prominent name in Indian film production and media. He founded Pritish Nandy Communications, which produced a number of critically acclaimed films, including Kaante, Sur, Jhankaar Beats, and Chameli. His diverse body of work showcased his ability to navigate various genres, from the thought-provoking Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi to the light-hearted Pyaar Ke Side Effects.

In the early 2000s, Nandy expanded his horizons into television with the creation of The Pritish Nandy Show on Doordarshan. The talk show became a platform for engaging conversations with celebrities and solidified Nandy’s significant presence in the Indian media landscape.

Beyond filmmaking and television, Nandy was also a passionate poet and author, having penned over forty books of poetry in English, as well as works of fiction and translations. His translations of classical love poetry from Sanskrit and other languages garnered widespread acclaim. Additionally, Nandy was an accomplished painter, holding several exhibitions of his artwork throughout his career.
