Govt announces plan for Karachi-Sukkur Motorway

Funding will be secured through a public-private partnership

Construction of a new motorway connecting Karachi to Sukkur is scheduled to begin in 2025.

The project, announced by Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan, aims to improve transportation links between Pakistan’s north and south, connecting Karachi Port to Sukkur.

Funding will be secured through a public-private partnership, with the Sindh provincial government invited to participate. If a partnership isn’t established, the federal government will solely fund the project. The completed motorway is projected to generate Rs. 3,000 billion in revenue over 25 years.

The decision to construct the M6 motorway directly from Karachi to Sukkur, rather than from Hyderabad to Sukkur, was made following an agreement between the federal and Sindh governments.

This route change is intended to better facilitate port traffic. Previous attempts to establish a public-private partnership for this project failed, leading to the current plan.
