Punjab announces deadline for Free Solar Panel scheme registration
The Punjab government has announced that the final date for registration under its Free Solar Panel Scheme is January 5.
To qualify for the Punjab government’s Free Solar Panel Scheme, domestic electricity consumers must have a monthly usage between 0 and 200 units and a sanctioned load of no more than 2kW. Eligibility will be determined based on electricity consumption as indicated in the June 2024 bill.
Specific categories of consumers are excluded from the programme. Those who have committed electricity theft, own multiple or defective metres, or have defaulted on three or more payments in the last 12 months will not be eligible.
To ensure fairness in the selection process, beneficiaries will be chosen through computerised balloting. The verification process will involve cross-checking reference numbers and CNIC digits against monthly electricity bills. A helpline will be established to assist consumers with both registration and installation.
To prevent misuse, the solar panels and inverters will be linked to the consumer’s CNIC, facilitating monitoring and reducing the risk of theft.
The scheme is expected to benefit 100,000 consumers, allowing them to apply via SMS or an online portal starting January 5, 2025.
