Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt finalize divorce settlement after 8-year battle
Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finalized their divorce settlement, bringing an end to one of the most protracted and contentious divorces after 8 years.
They submitted a default declaration to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, indicating they have reached a written agreement regarding their marital and property rights, reported first by People magazine.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, said in a statement.
“She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
The filing stated that they relinquish any claim to future spousal financial support, but it does not provide additional details. A judge must approve the agreement. An email sent late Monday night to Pitt’s attorney for comment received no immediate response.
A private judge hired by the couple made a ruling that granted them equal custody of their children. However, Jolie later filed to have him removed from the case due to an undisclosed conflict of interest. An appeals court agreed, resulting in the judge’s removal, which forced the couple to restart the process. Although they divorced in 2019, the division of assets and child custody had not been finalized.

During the lengthy divorce, four of the couple’s six children became adults, eliminating the need for a custody agreement for them. The remaining minors are 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. In June, their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, successfully petitioned to remove Pitt’s name from hers.
Their other children are 23-year-old Maddox, 21-year-old Pax, and 19-year-old Zahara. The couple’s use of a private judge has kept the proceedings mostly confidential, with no official court actions in nearly a year and no signs of an impending agreement.
