No plan to ban VPNs, PTA chairman says

Rahman emphasized the transparency of the PTA's operations

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafiz Rahman has reiterated that no Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have been blocked in Pakistan, and there are no plans to do so.

Speaking at the launch ceremony of the PTA’s 2024 annual report, Rahman addressed concerns regarding potential VPN restrictions.

He stated, “We have said it before, and I repeat it now: we could block VPNs, but we won’t. To date, no VPNs have been blocked.”

Rahman further emphasized the transparency of the PTA’s operations, stating, “Those days are over when we could hide something and it would remain hidden. When questions arise about internet shutdowns in the name of national security, we often lack satisfactory answers.”

He emphasized that questions regarding national security and internet access should be directed to policymakers.
