Tall pacer Mohammad Irfan announces retirement

He is considered one of the tallest international cricketers ever

Seven-foot-one fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has announced his retirement from international cricket, becoming the third Pakistani cricketer to do so in less than 24 hours. The announcement was made via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Irfan’s retirement is not expected to significantly impact the Pakistan cricket team, as his last international appearance was over five years ago. The 42-year-old has continued to play domestic cricket, most recently representing Khan Research Laboratories in the President’s Cup.

Considered one of the tallest international cricketers ever, the left-arm fast bowler played 86 times for Pakistan across Test, ODI, and T20I formats, forming a crucial part of their pace attack in the early to mid-2010s. His imposing height allowed him to generate considerable pace, making him a formidable opponent for even the strongest batting lineups.

However, his career was hampered by injuries, including a pelvis stress fracture that cut short his 2015 World Cup campaign, and disciplinary issues, resulting in a six-month ban in 2017 for failing to report an approach from a bookmaker.

Irfan took 109 wickets in his international career, earning one Player of the Match award in a 2013 ODI against South Africa in Centurion, where he took four wickets, dismissing key batsmen Graeme Smith, Colin Ingram, AB de Villiers, and Faf du Plessis. His T20I debut against India was also noteworthy, featuring the dismissal of Virat Kohli. Since leaving the Pakistan national team, Irfan has played T20 cricket internationally.
