Mild cold wave to hit Sindh as winter conditions intensify
Sindh is set to experience a “mild cold wave” starting today, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), as winter conditions deepen across the country with predicted rain and snowfall in various regions.
The nightime temperatures in upper Sindh are expected to drop between 7-9 degrees Celsius.
Central Sindh will see temperatures ranging from 9 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius at night, while southern Sindh is anticipated to experience temperatures between 10 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius. Karachi may record temperatures as low as 11 degrees Celsius to 13 degrees Celsius tonight and into Sunday.
The PMD also noted that dry and cool winds from the northeast and northwest will continue to affect the region.
Meanwhile, a significant cold wave has descended upon Balochistan, with temperatures plummeting in several areas. In mountainous regions near the Afghanistan border, temperatures have dropped to as low as -7 degrees Celsius. Shelabagh recorded -6 degrees Celsius, while Ziarat, Toba Achakzai, Khanuzai, and Qila Abdullah experienced temperatures of -5 degrees Celsius. In Chaman, Pishin, Muslim Bagh, and Kan Mehtarzai, temperatures fell to -3 degrees Celsius.
The extreme cold has resulted in frozen water in drains and streets across various areas. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warns that temperatures in northeastern and central Balochistan are expected to further decrease starting tomorrow.
Additionally, the dry, cold weather has contributed to the spread of seasonal illnesses, particularly affecting children, raising health concerns in the region.
The PMD has also forecast moderate rain and thunderstorms, with snowfall over hilly areas, beginning today and continuing until December 11 in regions such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Similar weather patterns are expected in parts of Punjab today and tomorrow.
Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential issues, especially in northern areas.
