The upper regions of Pakistan are facing a wave of severe cold weather, with Duki in Balochistan experiencing a record hailstorm not seen in 42 years. This has intensified the chill, especially following recent snowfall.

In Kalam and Swat, the snowfall has heightened the cold, while the mountains of Balakot and the Kaghan Valley are covered in thick snow.

Heavy hail and rain in Barkhan, Balochistan, have caused significant damage to crops.

Currently, cold winds are sweeping through Quetta, and Karachi is also feeling the effects of the cold, particularly during the night and early morning.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted thunderstorms with rain and snowfall in northeastern Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir today. However, the majority of the country is expected to remain dry and cold.

Yesterday, Quetta and Layyah recorded the lowest temperatures, reaching minus 8 degrees Celsius. Light fog is anticipated in the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh.

Changes in weather expected in Karachi

The PMD has also predicted a shift in Karachi’s weather starting today, with strong winds likely to increase the chill factor.

Rainfall has led to a drop in temperatures in Multan, Lodhran, and Khushab, with additional rain expected in the areas around Dera Murad Jamali. The recent hailstorm in Duki has caused damage to solar panels and trees.

Karachi has been identified as the most polluted city in Pakistan today, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 233. Multan follows closely with an AQI of 227, while Lahore ranks third with an AQI of 216.
