Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said on Friday that 45 people have died and 289 have been injured in rain-related incidents during the current monsoon season in Punjab.

The agency, issuing a fact sheet on the monsoon and flood situation on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, said 33 people died in the collapse of dilapidated buildings, six drowned, four were electrocuted, and two were killed by lightning.

Rainfall was recorded across most districts of Punjab over the past 24 hours, with Sialkot receiving 67 mm, Joharabad 56 mm, Lahore 46 mm, Sargodha 44 mm, Attock 35 mm, Khushab 27 mm, Murree 21 mm, Rawalpindi 17 mm, Narowal 15 mm, and Chiniot and Mianwali 7 mm each.

The PDMA said rains were expected to continue until Aug. 5.

The authority said a low-level flood situation persisted at Kalabagh and Chashma on the Indus River, while rivers, dams and barrages were under continuous monitoring.

It said drainage operations were completed quickly due to advance planning and the availability of machinery, adding that affected people were being provided medical assistance and compensation would be paid to affected families under the Punjab government’s policy.

The PDMA advised residents to stay away from storm drains, rivers, canals and low-lying areas and urged parents to keep children away from water bodies.
