South Africa’s Mia le Roux has withdrawn from the Miss Universe finals in Mexico, organisers have said, citing health issues.

“Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” she said in the statement.

The rise of le Roux, 28, was historical for the country as she was the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa in August. Her victory was marked by controversy, including the withdrawal of another finalist who faced trolling over her Nigerian heritage.

The Miss South Africa has expressed its commitment to le Roux’s health and well-being. The organisation vowed to support her until she “returns to full health”.

“However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”

While le Roux has not shared specific details about her health issue, the organisation praised her for demonstrating “incredible courage and grace” during this challenging time. “Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” it added.
