Imaan Mazari and husband sent on three-day remand
Lawyers Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha were sent on a three-day remand by an Islamabad anti-terrorism court today, facing charges under terrorism laws.
The hearing was presided over by Judge Abu Al-Hasanat Muhammad Zulqarnain.
The prosecution, represented by the police, requested a 30-day remand for both Mazari and Chattha. The prosecutor argued that the lawyers had illegally attempted to remove barriers, and requested a video analysis and voice matching to support the charges.
The prosecution’s statement read the charges, alleging that Mazari and Chattha had attempted to illegally remove barriers, disrupting traffic flow. They further stated that the lawyers had been previously informed about the traffic route. The prosecution expressed surprise at the lawyers’ alleged violation of the law.
The defense, represented by Advocate Ataullah Khandi and Advocate Qaisar Imam, strongly contested the terrorism charges. Khandi argued that while Mazari and Chattha may have attempted to remove barriers, this did not constitute a terrorist act, suggesting instead that the actions constituted interference with government operations.
He questioned the basis for the 30-day remand request, especially since the accused were not denying their actions. Imam further emphasized that requesting a remand was illogical given the accused were not denying their involvement.
Advocate Ahsan Pirzada, representing Mazari, added that the individuals involved in the altercation were not in police uniform. Khandi criticized the application of anti-terrorism laws in this case, stating that it trivialized the seriousness of such charges.
Judge Zulqarnain questioned the prosecution’s request for a 30-day remand, prompting the prosecutor to explain that a forensic analysis of video evidence was necessary. The hearing concluded without a decision on the remand request.
