Miscalculated Maulana’s support for amendment, Siddiqui admits

Siddiqui stated that no specific date has been set for the amendment's presentation

PMLN leader Irfan Siddiqui has acknowledged a miscalculation regarding the constitutional amendment, stating that they initially believed Maulana Fazlur Rehman would readily agree to the proposed changes.

He clarified that the amendment will be presented only after Maulana Fazlur Rehman is fully satisfied with its contents.

Siddiqui stated that no specific date has been set for the amendment’s presentation, emphasizing that it cannot proceed without Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s approval. He expressed hope that the matter could be resolved by the end of September.

Regarding the content of the amendment, Siddiqui asserted that the proposed changes are unlikely to deviate significantly from the initial draft. He clarified that the current draft is essentially the same as the original, with only minor adjustments and clarifications.

He further explained that the amendment primarily revolves around two key points: the establishment of a Constitutional Court and the restoration of the mechanism for judicial appointments to the pre-18th Amendment status.

Siddiqui highlighted that the establishment of a Constitutional Court is a vision shared by Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, and that the Parliament is now fulfilling Nawaz Sharif’s aspirations.
