Government did not consult allies on judicial reforms, claims Ijazul Haq Zia

Says he could be more effective than Gandapur in talks with Afghanistan

PML-Z leader Ijazul Haq has criticised the government for not consulting its allies regarding the anticipated constitutional amendment related to the higher judiciary.

While appearing on Rubaroo, he questioned the government’s decision to conduct legislation in “secrecy”. The programme was aired on Aaj News on Saturday. “If the government is genuinely interested in good legislation, perhaps the PTI would also support it.”

The ruling coalition is expected to present a “constitutional package”—that aims to fix the chief justice of Pakistan’s tenure at three years—on Sunday (tomorrow). The PTI has opposed it.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked PML-N lawmakers and his coalition partners to ensure their attendance in the august houses tomorrow. It was revealed during a dinner hosted for MPs in Islamabad.

While discussing the terms of reference for the special committee formed by the National Assembly speaker, Ijaz said that the committee aims to uphold the supremacy of Parliament, parliamentarians, and the Constitution. He noted that any proposed changes for the improvement of Parliament and the Constitution would also be considered.

He praised the notion of reconciliation among political parties in parliament, suggesting that “if done correctly,” this could evolve into a Truth and Reconciliation Committee. Ijaz emphasized that the committee should make a few “decisive moves” to demonstrate that Parliament is supreme. He added that if political parties unite, they can not only foster peace and stability but also effectively address ongoing challenges.

Ijaz, a veteran politician with 36 years of experience, expressed deep concern over the state of the nation, stating he has “never seen such alarming circumstances” before. He urged all stakeholders to come together and find common ground.

When asked about PTI founder Imran Khan’s comments about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur’s statements, he explained that individuals in such situations often take an aggressive stance. He added that conflicting messages emerged from Khan in the recent past.

Regarding Gandapur’s mention of negotiations with Afghanistan, Ijaz asserted that he could be more effective in this context than Gandapur. He referred to his father’s legacy, who was honoured as a martyr in the Afghan jihad, stating: “If I go there, they will listen to me, but I cannot go directly.”

He added that if the KP chief minister wanted to engage, he could have facilitated discussions between the government and Afghanistan to propose constructive ideas, leading to better outcomes.

Ijaz cautioned that if Gandapur were to conduct negotiations, it would not only weaken Pakistan’s position but also lead to “national embarrassment,” emphasising the sensitivity of the matter.

While speaking about the constitutional amendment regarding the higher judiciary, he claimed that the government has not directly consulted any of its allies. He mentioned that apart from the PPP, he has reached out to others and confirmed that no one has been informed about the matter.

He noted that during the dinner hosted by the PM and the president, discussions took place, but the specifics of the legislation were not disclosed. “Some people went one way, and others went another,” he said, highlighting the lack of clarity around the proposed changes.

Ijaz raised concerns over speculation regarding the establishment of a constitutional court and a legal court, with two separate heads and an increase in the number of judges. He pointed out that changes regarding suo motu actions are also being discussed, stating: “These are all rumors that people like us, who are privy to inside information, are bringing to light.”

He added that it is not a mere money bill, as individuals may vote according to their preferences. “If someone wants to vote, or if the government persuades someone to vote, no one can stop them. All independents can also cast their votes,” he said.
